Aldersely Junction to Stourport
From Great Haywood on the Trent and Mersey down to Stouport on the River Severn.
Probably the first place to moor up after the Wolverhampton flight. It is still close to Wolverhampton, and apparently has occasional problems with ropes being let loose (according to Alex - qv) - though it is clearly not major.
It is very nearly physically the first place to moor, because the banks between here and Aldersley do not encourage you to banng pins in. There are short term moorings with rings both above and below the lock.
A lot of choice for eating and drinking - Alex's Restaurant is outstanding - - and good value. Eastern Meiterranean is the bias, and it is well worth stopping for. There are several pubs and a branch of the "Nisa" chain with a very good butchery, all within 200 metres of the bridge.
There are plenty of mooring places down the canal from Compton - both organsied rings and canal banks that are easy to moor up to.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!
We had two boats following us down the Bratch locks - and a boat coming up started to come into the bottom lock as we vacated. This doesn't work!
Lock keeper dealt with it very tactfully. (Much more so than I would have). And it wasn't a hire boat
Pkeasant little village (and the home of the chairs on the boat. There are two traditional butchers - look good (closing as we passed) and two chip shops.
It is well worth the walk up to Kinver Edge. Bathams Bitter is brewed locally, slipped down very well at the pub (name forgotten) on the way back down.
